Ben Dunn Literary Agent on What He Looks For in a Submission: Memoir and Fiction

I had a lovely conversation today with my brother Ben Dunn about what publishers and agents want today, in 2024

I am very lucky that my brother is an agent - look at the family resemblance! And not only that, he is also an ex big time editor. He was commissioning editor at Random House and Bonnier, among other big houses, and he really knows his stuff.

Six years ago he set up a literary agency called DunnFogg with Jack Fogg who also used to be a big time literary editor, for Bloomsbury, Harper Collins, among others.

Here we talk about what agents want, what publishers want, and what is selling right now in 2024. We talk a bit about the publishing industry, and also about the agent/ author relationship - and he gives some amazing tips to first time writers wanting to break through and get published. This is a really important resource whether you’re already published or a total beginner, and I urge you to listen.

I am an incurable memoir addict. I love reading it, teaching it, and writing it. Here you will find stories from a life, but you will also learn how to write it, and how memoir can be transformative beyond the page.
